A condemnation of violence, of the masculine cult of the knife, Lorca’s play was celebrated for its inherent message of peace, speaking particularly from and of the predicament of women who are left behind in the aftermath of violence with only the memories of men. The Pandies’ “contemporisation”, brings the play to India, to contemporary Punjab. A call against exclusion, the Pandies’ version uses this tragedy to make a fervent appeal for inclusivity.
